Experience vs. Qualification – What do you need to be a mortgage adviser?

It’s the age old question: do you need experience or a qualification to get the job? There isn’t always a clear answer, as it will likely depend on the job you are aiming for. There are plenty of industries where on-the-job training will develop the skills and knowledge you need to progress without needing a qualification, while in other sectors, having the right qualification can be a regulatory requirement to ensure you are starting your new role at a suitable standard.

When applying for jobs within the financial sector, such as mortgage adviser roles, passing the CeMAP Mortgage Advice qualification is a great starting point. Obtaining some practical knowledge of the role would benefit anyone starting out in the industry, and this is where the CMAcert qualification can help.

The Competent Mortgage Adviser certificate (CMAcert for short), is a qualification based on practical knowledge of the mortgage adviser role, essentially giving you that valuable on-the-job understanding, recorded in a digital workbook which you can present to employers as a type of record of achievement. The course is set into units which develop your understanding of the day-to-day tasks you will face when working as a mortgage adviser, starting with finding clients and working through putting together mortgage and protection recommendations, right up to the sign up process.

The course is studied online, making it a lot more flexible to fit around your current work and home life commitments, and save you having to undertake work experience for free to gain that valuable insight.

By completing the CMAcert qualification, you will not only be showing potential or current employers that you are committed to being the best mortgage adviser you can be, but you will also have the confidence to start your new job as a professionally qualified adviser with knowledge and insight into the role, helping towards your CAS status sign off.
